Potawatomi seeking trust status on tribal owned land

Forest County Board Chairman Tom Tallier updated the county board on a letter he had received from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The certified letter informed the county that the Potawatomi Community has a request into the bureau to change the status of tribal owned land to trust land. The 184 acres of land contains a large ore deposit. The county has a limited amount of time to respond to the request.

“I find it unusual that this letter came about the same time as we are discussing mining,” said board member Jill Zagar Kettlewell.

“That land will have higher regulations than you do,” responded Tina Vanzile, Mole Lake.
