On July 17, the American Legion Post 211, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3635 and the Florence County Historical Society gathered at the Woodlawn Cemetery to honor the last Grand Army of the Republic veteran buried in Florence County. During the ceremony George Washington Baird was “relieved of his post” using the traditional GAR burial wording. Florence County Service Officer Jeff Hickey read the official decree honoring Mr. Baird. Near his grave site, shots by the firing squad and the playing of taps ended the ceremony.
